Vaughn Belak: Art Imitates Life?

Vaughn Belak: Art Imitates Life?
Written by: Jodi Renee’ Thomas
Dstripped Magazine

On his website, Vaughn Belak (www.vaughnbelak.com) refers to himself as an “artist, miscreant, long time stumbling bar fixture and reformed musical deviant of questionable talent.” In person, Belak can only be referred to as larger than life. He has an almost cartoon-like appearance with his often shocking blood red or black hair, pale skin, tattoo covered body and devilish grin that let’s you know that he is almost always up to something. He has in recent years become the art worlds token “bad boy” and that is a reputation Belak has not only earned, but wears proudly.

His past of touring the country with bands such as “Beautiful Destruction,” “She’s Dead,” “Synical,” “Heebee Geebees” and countless others show just to look at him. If you saw him walking down the street, you would assume he was a “rock star” or at least a “rock star wannabe.” He’s got the face, the attitude, the swagger, and often the drunken shenanigans part down flat. Little would you know that he is up faithfully every morning painting at 9am, and that his artwork is hanging on the walls of hundreds of homes throughout the world (including my own.) Vaughn Belak has found the universal balance of work hard for your passion, and then play even harder. I must admit, I am a bit jealous, as that is a balance that many of us destructively creative types struggle for daily.

In his youth, Belak expressed his creativity by painting on his friends leather jackets, skateboards, and tagging (or graffiti.) “I think some of my friends still have the leather jackets I painted twenty years ago, not that they can really wear them to their stock market jobs or anything,” Belak mused at how much time had passed. He then put down his paint brushes and leather jackets for a guitar and a pair of leather pants, to proceed on rock n’roll tours and make a million or so bad decisions. Then about eight years ago, as he was watching his at the time girlfriend paint away her pain and frustration, he decided to bring his own brushes out of retirement. He started by resurrecting the skulls, shrunken heads and monster motives from his youth but the new ones showed a bit more flair, angst, obvious emotion than their predecessors. A few months later, a friend of his was managing a night club and agreed to let him hang some of his new work on the walls. Within weeks, they were sold out and an artist was born.

Since then this modern day nomad has lived all over the country, but he mostly splits the title of home between Atlanta, GA and Orlando, FL. To the point that his friends in either city laugh when he moves with a jovial “you’ll be back” and a “see you soon” hug. Perhaps the love of these cities is what gives him his edge or at least his versatility. If nothing else, calling two very different cities home gives him a countless amount of bars to stumble out of and go home inspired.

Following in the footsteps of other painters like Vincent Van Gogh and Jackson Pollack, Vaughn Belak battles the demons of drug addition, over indulgence of alcohol and personal pain daily; yet uses them to motivate and inspire his artwork. Artwork that just like it’s artist, paints a vision of melancholy, morose but more than it’s share of whimsy. In recent years his art has transformed from cartoonish shrunken heads and skulls to sensuous and scantily clad women who show obvious power and strength but still with a dark side. When talking about his career, Belak speaks with such a self deprecating humility that it’s almost charming. Perhaps it’s his past, or maybe it’s his future that keeps him striving to grow both as a person and an artist. He will openly admit that he drunkenly fell head first into his new found success, but it will always be the best decision he’s ever made inebriated.

For now, he is busy fielding shows in Orlando at Tatami Sake’ Lounge, Pom Poms off Bumby and the like. That is, until he decides it time for him to live in Atlanta again. Then that city will be lucky to have him, and be his muse. For those who are no where near the places that Belak feels at home, you can order his art for your home on his website (http://www.vaughnbelak.com/). And for those of us who cannot afford the high price of original art ($200-$300 for an original, $60-$100 for a print), Belak has gone back to his roots. His artwork will be available on T-shirts and skateboards in the coming months, thanks to Jacket Off Clothing (http://www.jacketoffclothing.com/). So now, we are all invited to Vaughn Belak’s private party.

I was the “friend” who gave him his first show by allowing him to hang his paintings in the club I was running, I knew then that he would go far. But even I am amazed and proud of the niche he has made for himself and the success he has found doing something he loves. Vaughn Belak. Questionable talent? I think not.

How it ALL began….

While sitting in an executive board meeting one afternoon I simply said, “I can’t wait to get this jacket off and go surf!”

That’s where it all began.

Of course we get it! JACKET OFF is a funny play on words….we meant for it to be, but JACKET OFF Clothing Company is so much more than a clever double entendre.

Whether you’re taking your jacket off to go surf/skate/play or you’re taking off the mental straight jacket of life’s stress’ our philosophy is simple “Know NO Limits”, get out there and do something!

Here at JACKET OFF Clothing Company, we do so much more than make T-shirts. JACKET OFF Clothing Company sponsors many extremely talented young pro and amateur, up and coming athletes in Surf, Skate, Blades, Moto X, FMX, BMX, MMA, Snow, Wake, Parkour and other sports. We strive to build great relationships with our athletes, parents, and their communities by keeping kids off the streets and channeling talent, energy and intelligence into their sport.

We also sponsor and promote many local unsigned artists and bands, as well as several major national and international professional recording artists.

We pride ourselves in the fact that we are actively involved in many community charitable events. Whether it is contributing to the maintenance, repairs and renovation of local skate parks to donating portions of our profits to cancer research and its awareness, JACKET OFF Clothing Company strives to make the world a better, often more humorous place!

We started selling our shirts and hats to surf shops and local stores in Central Florida and soon realized this little startup company had extreme potential.

We’ve now spread from coast to coast and have worldwide internet sales. We are carried at countless surf shops, skate shops, skate parks, department stores, clubs, bars and tattoo shops. We are stoked that so many people sport our gear! We’ve seen a plethora of different individuals around the country, from famous actors to homeless people, wearing JACKET OFF T’s. Who would have thought 2 words, when said separately, have little impact, but when said together can be pretty hilarious?
If you’re looking to sport multicolored unicorns or cute cuddly kittens, JACKET OFF is probably not for you. If you’re looking for individual style with a crass, yet subtle, message….then you’ve found it in JACKET OFF Clothing Company; badass, high quality, custom clothes with subtle humor, at a decent price.

We thank YOU, our JACKET OFF army of fans who continue to represent and spread the JACKET OFF vibe with pride.

Sincerely, Team JOC

MotoX Complete Graphics Packages

JACKET OFF Clothing Co. has teamed with VZF Racing and Limited Decal to design CUSTOM Complete Graphics Kits for the Team JOC MotoX riders. It wasn’t easy. It took several weeks of negotiations. It took MANY hours of designing, proofing and re-proofing, BUT….it’s OFFICIAL! The Complete Graphics Packages from Limited Decal have become an affordable reality for our Team JOC/VZF Racing Riders.

With the partnership of JOC and VZF Racing come the SICKEST graphics to hit the tracks! There are so many people to thank, but let’s just start at the top. First off there’s William Shaw – VP of Marketing and Creative Design for JACKET OFF Clothing Company. His artwork and logo designs are featured on the graphics and his tireless efforts and negotiations with the other companies involved resulted in the finished product and partnership with VZF Racing being one of the best collaborations to date that purely benefits the Team JOC Riders above all others. Then there is Richard Vilasi – Owner of VZF Racing, whose part of the deal (in my opinion) is the most impressive to us here at JOC. In return for the cross promotion and face time on the bikes, VZF Racing has agreed to offer ALL Team JOC riders up to 25% – 35% discount on not only parts and labor, but practically FREE track support at ALL events that he attends for our team riders. After that would be Jim Anderson – Team JOC Talent Scout and Team Manager.  His opinions, ideas and knowledge of the sport and the bikes was invaluable! As he and William worked together to make this “idea” a reality, it was Jim who put up 50% of the funds, along with Richard Vilasi covering the remaining 50%, to get the FIRST Graphics Package out of the design phase, onto the first bike and onto the tracks! With out them, this would’ve never happened! Lastly, but definitely not least, there is Limited Decal! William and Brett Hayes at LD were able to incorporate the graphics into a quality product for the team and then negotiate a deal that offers the Team JOC riders up to 30% off on ALL graphics purchased through Limited Decal for ALL Team JOC/VZF riders! Once the first bike, James Anderson #272, hit the track completely decked out in the graphics package, they were an instant hit! A must have for not only Team JOC/VZF riders, but the envy of all other riders on the circuit! So, with all of that being said, we would like to thank VZF Racing, Jim Anderson and Brett Hayes of Limited Decal for ALL of the hard work put forth into making this happen.

Below are proofs for the Team JOC riders that will be rocking the Complete Graphics Kits on there bikes for the 2011 race season….so far, with Justin Coley, James Anderson and Nathan Anderson repping them NOW at the tracks every weekend!
